Merry has twice as many pencils, so Sue will have half as many.  Thus, S=X/2, where S is the amount of Sue's pencils.

Sati [7]
If we divide 56 by 4 we get 14.  Why by4?  So that one number is 3 times the other So he had 14 balls that went into the green bags and 42 (56-14) that went into the red bags.  We could just answer the question and say 14 but I think they want to know how many in each green bag.
14 and 42 don't work because they are not the same number of balls.  What number is a common factor?  7 is,
We could have 2 green bags and split the 14 balls into 2 groups of 7 and with the remaining 42 - put them into 6 red bags of 7 each.
And so the answer to your question is:
7 ball in each bag  = 2 bags are green, and 6 bags are red
                                        14 balls              +    42 balls            = 56 bouncy balls

8. Patrice and Don buy a home for $92,000. The property tax rate is$39.50 per $1,000 of assessed value. The assessment rate is 4
Kaylis [27]

We start by calculating the assessed value, that is 41% of the price.

The price is $92,000.

Then, the assessed value is:

AV=a\cdot P=\frac{41}{100}\cdot92000=0.41\cdot92000=37720

The property tax rate is $39.50 per $1000 of assessed value, so we can express this rate as:

\text{tax rate}=\frac{39.50}{1000}=0.0395

We then can multiply this rate by the assessed value to calculate the total property tax:

\text{tax}=0.0395\cdot37720=1489.94

NOTE: we could have also multiplied 39.50 by 37.72. The value 37.72 is the thousands of dollars of assessed value. We would have obtained the same result: 39.50*37.72=1489.94.

Answer: the property tax is $1,489.94.

Terry and Callie do word processing. For a certain prospectus Callie can prepare it two hours faster than Terry can. If they wor
Dahasolnce [82]

Time taken by jerry alone is 10.1 hours

Time taken by callie alone is 8.1 hours

<u>Solution:</u>

Given:- For a certain prospectus Callie can prepare it two hours faster than Terry can

Let the time taken by Terry be "a" hours

So, the time taken by Callie will be (a-2) hours

Hence, the efficiency of Callie and Terry per hour is \frac{1}{a-2} \text { and } \frac{1}{a} \text { respectively }

If they work together they can do the entire prospectus in five hours

\text {So, } \frac{1}{a-2}+\frac{1}{a}=\frac{1}{5}

On cross-multiplication we get,

\frac{a+(a-2)}{(a-2) \times a}=\frac{1}{5}

\frac{2 a-2}{(a-2) \times a}=\frac{1}{5}

On cross multiplication ,we get

\begin{array}{l}{5 \times(2 a-2)=a \times(a-2)} \\\\ {10 a-10=a^{2}-2 a} \\\\ {a^{2}-2 a-10 a+10=0} \\\\ {a^{2}-12 a+10=0}\end{array}

<em><u>using quadratic formula:-</u></em>

x=\frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^{2}-4 a c}}{2 a}

x=\frac{12 \pm \sqrt{144-40}}{2}

\begin{array}{l}{x=\frac{12 \pm \sqrt{144-40}}{2}} \\\\ {x=\frac{12 \pm \sqrt{104}}{2}} \\\\ {x=\frac{12 \pm 2 \sqrt{26}}{2}} \\\\ {x=6 \pm \sqrt{26}=6 \pm 5.1} \\\\ {x=10.1 \text { or } x=0.9}\end{array}

If we take a = 0.9, then while calculating time taken by callie = a - 2 we will end up in negative value

Let us take a = 10.1

So time taken by jerry alone = a = 10.1 hours

Time taken by callie alone = a - 2 = 10.1 - 2 = 8.1 hours
