They were nomads, which move from place to place, to follow herds of animals such as buffalo to hunt and provide food. They also used the hides as blankets and in ceremonial dressing. They also made stone tools for many purposes, such as a stone arrowhead, used for hunting and defense. Some of these nomads were sophisticated enough to turn this stone into knives and other sharp melee weapons.
The attitude of respect and the devotion to ones family observed in Chinese society especially in the imperial period is known as "filial piety," although other terms are relevant as well.
