New World colonization won support in England amid a time of rising English fortunes among the wealthy, a tense Spanish rivalry,

and mounting internal social unrest. But supporters of English colonization always touted more than economic gains and mere national self-interest. They claimed to be doing God’s work. Many claimed that colonization would glorify God, England, and Protestantism by Christianizing the New World’s pagan peoples. Advocates such as ____________________________the Younger and John Dee, for instance, drew upon The History of the Kings of Britain, written by the twelfth-century monk Geoffrey of Monmouth, and its mythical account of King Arthur’s conquest and Christianization of pagan lands to justify American conquest. Answer:

Advocates such as Richard Hakluyt the Younger and John Dee, for instance, drew upon The History of the Kings of Britain, written by the twelfth-century monk Geoffrey of Monmouth, and its mythical account of King Arthur’s conquest and Christianization of pagan lands to justify American conquest.

Explanation:

Richard Hakluyt the Younger represented one of the most important propagandists of British colonization in North America. Among his many works, he wrote Divers Voyages Touching the Discoverie of America and the Islands Adjacent, supporting the plan of Sir Humphrey Gilbert to colonize North America. After Walter Raleigh (Gilbert's half brother) took control of the colonization process, Hakluyt elaborated a Discourse on Western Planting for Queen Elizabeth in 1584, in which he claimed that colonization was a way to predicate Protestanism and this would foster the expansion of the Spanish economy.

During the 1880s, following completion of the 105-mile Suez Canal, French entrepreneur Ferdinand DeLesseps poured billions of francs and 25,000 lives into an unsuccessful attempt to build a sea-level canal through Panama. The French effort was thwarted by disease, unreliable machinery, and almost a billion cubic yards of rock that stood in the way.

In 1879, Ferdinand Marie de Lesseps, the builder of the Suez Canal proposed a sea level canal through Panama. With the success he had with the construction of the Suez Canal in Egypt just ten years earlier, de Lesseps was confident he would complete the water circle around the world. Time and mileage would be dramatically reduced when traveling from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean or vice versa. For example, it would save a total of 18,000 miles on a trip from New York to San Francisco.

Although de Lesseps was not an engineer, he was appointed chairman for the construction of the Panama Canal. Upon taking charge, he organized an International Congress to discuss several schemes for constructing a ship canal. De Lesseps opted for a sea-level canal based on the construction of the Suez Canal. He believed that if a sea-level canal worked when constructing the Suez Canal, it must work for the Panama Canal.

Lubov Fominskaja [6]

A legislative branch was proposed by the Virginia Plan and this was a Bicameral legislature consisting of two chambers. Three branches were involved in this plan namely Legislative, Executive and Judicial.

Explanation:

 • This plan is mainly notable for its role in setting an overall agenda and also for setting the idea of Population-weighted representation.
 • Along with the New Jersey plan, this plan existed to support small state's interests.
 • The scope of resolutions succeeded in broadening the debate for encompassing fundamental values to the structure and powers of the national government.
 • The main principles stated that "Each of the states would be represented to the number of free inhabitants. This resulted in the states with a large population having more representatives than the smaller states".
 • The legislative branch would have the power to veto state laws if the states were deemed incompetent was a proposal put by the Virginia Plan.
