All people benefit if all people pursue their short-term interests. Every possible course of action ends up harming everyone. There is no possible action that does not break the law.

Prisoner's dilemma is based on real life strategies that police used when interrogating members of criminal negotiation.

When the police have no evidence to convict them, They will separate each members in different room, and told them that whoever speak out against their friend first will be offered immunity while the rest will receive the punishment.

This tactics create 3 possibles situation for the criminals:

1. They could talk and sold out their friends. In this case, they will benefit and their friends will have to pay the price.

2. They could shut up, but one of their friends choose to talk. IN this case, they will pay the price and one of their friend will benefit.

or, the best possible outcome for them is:

3. All of them choose not to talk. In this case, all of them will benefit since the police have no evidence against them.

But, for possibilities 3 to happen, every single of them has to  refrain from pursuing their short-term interests and hope that their friends do not betray them.

This is what is called as A prisoner's dilemma
