Hyponatremia is a condition that occurs when the concentration of sodium in the blood is too low. Sodium is critical in homeostasis because it maintains the fluid balance. In other words, it helps control the amount of water that circulates in the body. When sodium levels are low it becomes diluted and as a result, the body will have an excess of water, specifically extracellular fluid.

The excess fluid will have nowhere to go, so it goes into the cell. When this happens, it causes the cells to swell, which can lead to several health problems and some of them are life-threatening like cerebral edema.

In patients where the sodium balances are disturbed face the issue of electrolyte deficiency commonly known as Hyponatremia.
