France was encouraged to help ease the hardships endured by the Continental army thanks to the colonial victories in the battles of Trenton and Saratoga. After this victories France provided help and made a legal agreement with the U.S. For two reasons: Claiming their sovereignity and to prove they were capable of defending themselves against the British command.
