Summary. Enzymes are catalysts that, within the mild conditions of temperature, pH, and pressure of the cells, carry out chemical reactions at amazing high rate. They are characterized by a remarkable efficiency and specificity. Substrates are the substances on which enzymes act.

Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts (biocatalysts). Catalysts accelerate chemical reactions. The molecules upon which enzymes may act are called substrates, and the enzyme converts the substrates into different molecules known as products. Almost all metabolic processes in the cell need enzyme catalysis in order to occur at rates fast enough to sustain life.[1]:8.1 Metabolic pathways depend upon enzymes to catalyze individual steps. The study of enzymes is called enzymology and a new field of pseudoenzyme analysis has recently grown up, recognising that during evolution, some enzymes have lost the ability to carry out biological catalysis, which is often reflected in their amino acid sequences and unusual 'pseudocatalytic' properties.

6. How might a disturbance in a food web impact other organisms in the marine
environment?
Viefleur [7K]

Answer:

When one thing dies, or is taken away from the food web, then this could happen:

Let's say plants are taken away. Then, herbivores have nothing to eat, sot hey die. Then, carnivores have nothing to eat, and the same thing happens, etc.

Plants are the base of survival for every organism in nearly every ecosystem.

What is the layer of stem cells that constantly divide to renew the epidermis?
Mnenie [13.5K]

Answer: I think, I may be wrong, but I think the answer is stratum basale. i found this online

Explanation: The topmost layer is dead and sheds continuously. It is progressively replaced by stem cells that divide in the basal layer (stratum basale). The dermis connects the epidermis to the hypodermis and provides strength and elasticity due to the presence of collagen and elastin fibers.
