As a result of the Cuban revolution in 1959, relations between America and Cuba deteriorated greatly and have since been marked by tension and confrontation. The United States has no formal diplomatic relations with Cuba and, by virtue of its position as a superpower, maintains a trade embargo that makes it illegal for US companies to do business with Cuba. The US diplomatic representation in Cuba is handled by the Division of American Interests in Havana and there is a similar Section for Cuban Interests in Washington, D.C. Both are officially part of the respective embassies of Switzerland. The US imposed a ban on trade after the revolution due to Cuban nationalization of American enterprises.
