Imagine a researcher allowed the paper chromatogram to develop for far longer than necessary in the mobile phase, such that the

solvent front ran into the top edge of the paper and the spots continued to move. Would the resulting Retention Factors (Rf) be overestimated, underestimated or remain unaffected? Explain your reasoning.

Answer:

The resulting Retention Factors (Rf) would be overestimated

Explanation:

A Retention Factor (Rf) is calculated from the division of the distance of a spot (A) by the distance of the solvent front (B).

 • Rf = A/B

Let's assume we have a paper with 10 cm of lenght. In that in a normal experiment, the solvent front is at the 8cm mark, while the spot is at the 4cm mark. Thus the Rf is 0.5. However, if we let the solvent front run into the top edge of the paper, B will always be 10cm, while A keeps increasing. For instance, after a while B would be 10 cm while A is 7 cm, resulting in a Rf of 0.7. This means that the Rf was overestimated.

The reaction of ethyl acetate with sodium hydroxide, CH3COOC2H5(aq)+NaOH(aq)⇌CH3COONa(aq)+C2H5OH(aq) is first order in CH3COOC2H
Ne4ueva [31]

Answer:

so the reaction rate increases by a factor 6.

Explanation:

For the given equation the reaction is first order with respect to both ester and sodium hydroxide

So we can say that the rate law is

Rate(initial)=K[NaOH][CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}]

now as per given conditions the concentration of ester is increased by half it means that the new concentration is 1.5 times of old concentration

The concentration of NaOH is quadrupled means the new concentration is 4 times of old concentration.

The new rate law is

Rate(final)=K[1.5XNaOH][4XCH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}]

the final rate = 6 X initial rate

so the reaction rate increases by a factor 6.

Are there moles of stars in the universe?
Natalka [10]

Answer:

Yes, a mole is defined as 6x1023 of something, so a mole of stars is 6x1023 stars. If we compare this number to our estimate of the total number of stars, we find that there is about 1/10 of a mole of stars in the Universe.

Hope this helps!
