The diseases is highly contagious and easily spread through direct contact with infected person by uninfected person who had had no prior exposure to the virus. Although people with prior exposure can spread it and recover, it is rare. Also people without vaccination can equal contact the disease.

The disease is contagious from day 1 to day 2 before the manifestation of rash  and a patient is commonly isolated from a week after isolation to avoid the outbreak of the disease, and it takes 2 to 3 weeks for the uninfected person with contact with infected person to develop the virus
