This experiment can demonstrate Newton's first law which states "<em>an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force".</em>

In this case, the penny is at rest until Manuel exerts a force on the object, making it change its state of motion. So, basically, an external force is what made the penny to move and fall into the cup, if Manuel doens't exert this external force, then the peeny won't fall into the cup. That's Netwon's first law, the law of inertia.
