In this excerpt from a video transcript, which sentences demonstrate the use of emotional appeal as a persuasive technique? NARR

ATOR: As Arctic ice continues to melt, it will cause ripple effects across the planet. When the polar regions warm, even just a degree, it disturbs atmospheric and oceanic patterns. The patterns of the jet stream will be affected, which may lead to more extreme summer and winter weather events in Europe, Asia, and North America. Not only will our weather change, but sea level will rise too. Sea ice melt itself does not cause sea levels to rise because the ice is already in the water. But the melting of ice on a land surface, like Greenland, does because new water is flowing into the ocean. In addition, as ocean water warms, it expands, which also raises sea level. Warmer air temperatures will accelerate the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet, which contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by more than 20 feet. Sea ice creates a unique ecosystem that supports millions of plants and animals, from krill and ice algae to cod and walruses. Both the topside and underside of the ice provides places for the animals to hunt, hide, rest, mate, and give birth. Without sea ice, arctic plants and animals must either adapt or migrate. If they can’t, they will go extinct. If that isn’t enough, people who live in coastal communities within the Arctic Circle are also battling erosion along their coastlines. Sea ice serves as a buffer against wave action. Without it, the wind blows across a larger region of open water, resulting in stronger winds and bigger waves that erode the shoreline. These communities must relocate inland or their homes and land could be washed out to sea. For ice in the Arctic, it’s a race against time. If humans do not change what we are doing to the global climate, the ice will continue to disappear and life as we know it will be altered.

iVinArrow [24]
<span>The purpose of a character foil is to offer a contrast to another character, usually the protagonist. This, thereby, helps deepen the foiled character's personality, since he has something to battle against, to essentially fight for his values and/or methods. Basically, it heightens the characterization of the other character. </span>

What does this excerpt from "Arrangement in Black and White" suggest about the woman's behavior? Select all that apply.
Alexus [3.1K]

Answer:

Explanation:

This answer is not full, the options are missing. They are as following:

  • A. She wants other people to see her.
  • B. She feels genuine admiration for the man.
  • C. She exaggerates her actions in order to prove a point.
  • D. She is more intent on pleasing herself than she is on pleasing the man.

The answers are A, C and D.

<u>From the excerpt we can see the woman is exaggerating her movements and actions, which is most clearly seen in the last line "She spoke with great distinctness, moving her lips meticulously, as if in parlance with the deaf."</u>

<u>She is exaggerating her movement of the lips and accenting of the words in order to try to prove what she says and underline its importance, even to hide her real thoughts. </u>

<u>We also see she does this for her own enjoyment and exposure with the line "extended her hand at the length of her arm and held it so for all the world to see, until the Negro took it, shook it, and gave it back to her."</u>

<u>With this she is trying to draw attention to her pleasure, to the man taking her hand, to show how she is graceful and polite, and to better her social status. </u>
