Years before, Benjamin Franklin had summed up this point when he wrote: “A virgin state should preserve its virgin character and not go suitoring for alliances, but wait with decent dignity for the application of others.”

If you are asking due to the 15-1600s, then it's because the women back then were considered "unlawful" or "unacceptable" when they realized that they didn't have to be thrown around by the men. Women also did "witch-like" things such as warts, and long nails.

Many people did not like that they were granted these rights and segregated them, based on the "separate but equal" principle. The South is famous for its Jim Crow laws that segregated black Americans, but segregation existed everywhere. Groups such as the kkk formed, etc.
