I believe that Roosevelt's public criticism of Taft were justified. Roosevelt had led the Republican party with great sucess. Shortly after Taft was elected into office, with the help of Roosevelt and the progressvies that supported him, the Republican party was falling apart. It had split into two groups, conservatives who supported Taft and progressives who opposed him. This split occured because the progressives expect Taft to rule like Roosevelt did, to inspire the people, but he did not.

Taft did not carry out many of the reform programs that Roosevelt had begun and was very slow to make decisions. While Taft said that he tried to carry out the reform methods, many believed he wanted to halt them completely. After keeping quiet for months and meeting with Taft, he decided to speak out publicly. Although Roosevelt and Taft were once good friends, their differences in leading the country were drastic, and Roosevelt claimed Taft was disloyal.
