The PNS is responsible for relaxing the body and digesting food.

It conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity, and relaxes sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

It also triggers the body to secrete hormones to decrease blood pressure and heart rate, inducing a relaxation response.
