Botulinum is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterial species Clostridium botulinum and related species of the genus.

The botulinum toxin acts on the neurons by binding to the acetylcholine producing neurons at the axon terminal. Once the toxin binds, the toxin enters the axon terminal and cleaves the SNARE proteins which help the release of the neurotransmitter. As a result of this, the neurotransmitter is not released and thus the impulse transmission is inhibited which causes paralysis.
