Let x be the additional number of CD purchased by Maria,

That is, total purchased CD = x + 1,

Now,  for each additional CD, cost = $ 12.00,

So, the cost of x additional CD's = 12x dollars,

And, the total amount of the CDs = (14 + 12x) dollars

According to the question,

Total cost = $ 86.00

⇒ 14 + 12x = 86

⇒ 12x = 86 - 14 = 72

⇒ x = \frac{72}{12} = 6

Hence, the total number of CDs purchased = 6 + 1 = 7.
