A creative work is said to be in the public domain if there are no laws which restrict its use by the public at large. For insta

nce, a work may be in the public domain if no laws establish proprietary rights over the work, or if the work or its subject matter are specifically excluded from existing laws.
2 Because proprietary rights are founded in national laws, an item may be public domain in one jurisdiction but not another. For instance, some works of literature are public domain in the US but not in the EU and vice versa.

3 The underlying idea that is expressed or manifested in the creation of a work generally cannot be the subject of copyright law (see idea-expression divide). Mathematical formulae will therefore generally form part of the public domain, to the extent that their expression in the form of software is not covered by copyright; however, algorithms can be the subject of a software patent in some jurisdictions.

4 Works created before the existence of copyright and patent laws also form part of the public domain. The Bible and the inventions of Archimedes are in the public domain. However, copyright may exist in translations or new formulations of these works.

5 Although "intellectual property" laws are not designed to prevent facts from entering the public domain, collections of facts organized or presented in a creative way, such as categorized lists, may be copyrighted. Collections of data with intuitive organization, such as alphabetized directories like telephone directories, are generally not copyrightable. In some countries copyright-like rights are granted for databases, even those containing mere facts. A sui generis database rights regime is in place in the European Union.

6 Works of the United States Government and various other governments are excluded from copyright law and may therefore be considered to be in the public domain in their respective countries. They may also be in the public domain in other countries as well.

7 Creative Commons [2], an organization which promotes the migration of works into the public domain as well as copyleft licensing schemes, holds that:

8 Public access to literature, art, music, and film is essential to preserving and building on our cultural heritage.

Answer:

D) It provides specific examples of the topic of the passage.

Explanation:

This is the statement that best describes the role of the sentence. In the second paragraph of the passage, the author talks about proprietary rights. He tells us that this can often change from one jurisdiction to another one. In order to elaborate on this idea, the author provides the example of the EU and the US. Therefore, the purpose of the sentence is to provide specific examples of the topic of the passage.

jeka57 [31]
"The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe is a brilliant story with the theme of "even if you don't tell anyone when you commit a crime, your guilty mind will tear you apart". Near the end of the story, the narrator begins hearing the sound of the dead man's heart beating. This causes the narrator to go crazy enough to confess to the murder to the cops. The narration is very interesting. The story begins with the narrator claiming that he is not crazy. This immediately causes the readers to feel unsettled. Over the course of the story, as the narrator accounts his completely unjustified hatred for the old man with the strange eye, the readers come to realize that the narrator is crazy.  <span />

Q3. Fill in the blanks with correct form of the Verb given in bracket:
nirvana33 [79]

Answer:

Indians <u>are </u>known for their hospitality. They feel that guest is a person to be <u>honoured </u>and respected and <u>serving </u>him is a sacred duty. My mother <u>is</u> very particular about <u>keeping </u>things in their proper place, but the moment Mr. Narayan <u>arrived</u>, our guest room as well as our drawing room is in a total mess. He is very unsystematic and <u>throws </u>things here and there. As long as Mr. Narayan is in the house. our whole routine<u> is going to remain </u>upset.

Explanation:

Here, we need to pay attention to the tenses and voice of verbs.

The present simple tense (<em>are, throws</em>) is used to talk about habits, unchanging situations, general truths, and fixed arrangements.

The past simple tense (<em>arrived</em>) is used to talk about actions that took place and finished in the past.

The construction <em>is going to + infinitive</em><em> (is going to remain) </em>can be used for predictions based on something we can see or hear now.

Gerunds (<em>serving, keeping</em>) are nouns derived from verbs by adding -ing.

The passive voice (<em>to be honored</em>) is used when we want to emphasize the action and the object of a sentence rather than the subject.

Answer:

Chopin is showing us a social situation of the times with the woman as a prisoner of her husband. It is common knowledge that marriages are not always about mutual love between two people and during the time that Chopin was writing, this was more often the case. The story was created in the year of 1894. During that time, it shows how women weren't treated equally/fairly as men.
