A child in a boat throws a 5.90-kg package out horizontally with a speed of 10.0 m/s. Calculate the velocity of the boat immedia

tely after, assuming it was initially at rest. The mass of the child is 28.0 kg and that of the boat is 35.0 kg . (Take the package's direction of motion as positive.)

Answer:

0.94 m/s opposite the direction of the package

Explanation:

From the law of conservation of momentum,

Total momentum before the throw = Total momentum after the throw.

Note: Assuming the child, the boat and the package, where initially at the same velocity

U(m+m'+m'') = V(m+m')+v''(m'')................. Equation 1

Note: since the boat was initially at rest, U = 0 m/s

0 = V(m+m') + v'(m'')

-V(m+m') = v''(m'')....................... Equation 2

Where,

V = Velocity of the boat immediately after the throw, m = mass of the child, m' = mass of the boat, m'' = mass of the package, v'' = velocity of the package after the throw.

make V the subject of the equation

V = -v''(m'')/(m+m').................. Equation 3

Given: v'' = 10 m/s, m'' = 5.9 kg, m = 28 kg, m' = 35 kg

Substitute into equation 3

V = -10(5.9)/(28+35)

V = -59/63

V = -0.94 m/s.

The Negative sign shows that the velocity of the both immediately after the throw is in opposite direction to the velocity of the package

What type of energy is involved when a river moves sediment and erodes its banks?
ziro4ka [17]
<span>First question: The type of energy involved when a river moves sediment and erodes its banks is: option d. Kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy associated with motion. A body (in this case the water) that moves has an energy associated with its motion that is proportional to the speed (exactly to the square of the speed). When the water collides with the banks it is the kinetic energy of the river that erodes it Second question: the answer is the option d. As gravity pulls water down a slope potential energy changes to knietic energy. This is the, water loses altitude and gains velocity. The potential energy. which is proportional to the height, decreases and the kinetic energy, which is proportional to the square of the speed, increases.</span>

Compare and contrast scientific inquiry "skill and process".
Dmitrij [34]

Answer:

The inquiry process takes advantage of the natural human desire to make sense of the world... This attitude of curiosity permeates the inquiry process and is the fuel that allows it to continue. Process skills are not used for their own sake.

An infinitely long straight wire has a uniform linear charge density of Derive the 4. equation for the electric field a distance
marshall27 [118]

Answer:

E = \frac{\lambda}{2\pi \epsilon_0 r}

Explanation:

Let the linear charge density of the charged wire is given as

\frac{q}{L} = \lambda

here we can use Gauss law to find the electric field at a distance r from wire

so here we will assume a Gaussian surface of cylinder shape around the wire

so we have

\int E. dA = \frac{q}{\epsilon_0}

here we have

E \int dA = \frac{\lambda L}{\epsilon_0}

E. 2\pi r L = \frac{\lambda L}{\epsilon_0}

so we have

E = \frac{\lambda}{2\pi \epsilon_0 r}

Evaluate A car company wants to build a wind-powered car that converts 100 percent of the mechanical energy in the wind to the m
lorasvet [3.4K]

Answer:

There's one or two reasons, depending on what is meant by "wind-powered car".

The first reason is that it's impossible for any transfer of energy to be 100% efficient.  There will always be frictional losses.

Secondly, if the company means that they want to attach a wind turbine to the car so that the car is powered by the same wind that it generates, that violates the conservation of energy.

A 4 V power source is connected in parallel to four resistors: 1, 2, 2, and 3. Find the total current.
Keith_Richards [23]

Answer:

Explanation:

Equivalent resistance is 1 / ((1/1) + (1/2) + (1/2) + (1/3)) = 3/7 Ω

I = V/R = 4(7/3) = 28/3 = 9.3 A
