Rod brought 40 juice bottles to the picnic. He brought 28 apple juice bottles and the rest were orange juice bottles. What was the ratio of apple juice bottles to orange juice bottles?

When working with ratios, we have to be VERY careful. Wat ever is supposed to come 1st, we HAVE to put that, or it will be wrong. 

Ok so it says ratio of apple juice to orange juice bottles. 

So there are 28 apple juice bottles. 

So 28 will come 1st. 

Now we need to know how many orange juice bottles there are. 

40 - 28 = 12 

So, there are 12 orange juice bottles. 

Therefore 12 will come after.

28 to 12
 28

 12

Now we need to SIMPLIFY:

 28 ÷ 4  =   7 
-------------    ---- 
 12 ÷ 4  =   3

So, the ratio is 28:12, simplified is 7:3.
