Nitrogen-fixing bacteria are the bacteria which are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen into the compounds which can be used by the plants.

There are mainly two types of bacteria which perform this function:  

  • One is free-living bacteria (such as Azotobacter) present in soil and  
  • Other are symbiotic bacteria that live in the roots of the plants especially legumes. For example, Rhizobium lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants and help in fixing atmospheric nitrogen
