How do I find out what sets of points are on the line y=6x-4?

For each point, put the first number into the equation in place of 'x',
and put the second number into the equation in place of 'y', and then
see whether the equation makes sense. If it does, then that point is
on the line. If it doesn't, then it's not.

Example:

The equation is     y = 6x - 4

Choice 'C', point    (-4, 0)

Put the ' -4 ' in place of 'x', and put the ' 0 ' in place of 'y'.
Then the equation says
                                             0 = 6(-4) - 4

                                             0 = -24 - 4

                                             0 = -28

Does that make sense to you ? If it does, then math is not your game.

The equation is not a true statement.
So the point (-4, 0) in not on the line.

Using algebra...
n and n+2 are the integers
n*(n+2)=288
n^2+2n=288
n^2+2n-288=0
288=2*2*2*2*2*3*3=(2*2*2*2)*(2*3*3)=16*18 and 18-16=2
factor
(n+18)(n-16)=0
n+18=0
n=-18
n+2=-16
this is one solution
n-16=0
n=16
n+2=18

this is another solution
as you can see, it's just a matter of factoring
288

using arithmetic...
√288=16.97≈17

16 and 18 are the integers (as well as -16 and -18)

How many solutions does this system have?
marissa [1.9K]

Answer:

No solution.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let us approach this question geometrically . Number of solutions is the number of meeting points of the two graphs . We can see that the given equations are equations of lines . First equation is 5x - y = 3.

Second equation when divided by two can be written as 5x - y = -1.

We can see that these lines are parallel and therefore doesn't intersect.So no solution.
