The plant can disperse widely and increases it's chances of finding an environment with food. When food is scarce, the plasmodial form of the slime mold moves on top of its substrate and forms fruiting bodies. The spores of the fruiting body are light enough to be dispersed by wind or carried by animals to far distances.
