1 At a certain location, wind is blowing steadily at 10 m/s. Determine the mechanical energy of air per unit mass and the power

generation potential of a wind turbine with 70-m-diameter blades at that location. Also determine the actual electric power generation assuming an overall efficiency of 30 percent. Take the air density to be 1.25 kg/m3

Answer:

electric power generation  = 240.52 kW

Explanation:

given data

wind is blowing steadily =  10 m/s

diameter = 70 m

overall efficiency = 30 percent

air density = 1.25 kg/m³

solution

we know Kinetic energy is the form of  mechanical energy

so wind can  be convert to work entirely

and power potential of the wind is kinetic energy

mass flow rate = \frac{mv^2}{2}   .................1

e (mechanical ) = \frac{v^2}{2}

put here value

e (mechanical) = \frac{10^2}{2}

e (mechanical) = 50 J/kg

and

We know the mass relation

mass m = = ρ V A    ..............2

here A is area = \frac{\pi D^2}{4}

so mass equation will be

mass m = ρ V \frac{\pi D^2}{4}

put here value we get

mass m = (1.25 kg/ m³) ×  ( 10 m/s)  ×  \frac{\pi 70^2}{4}

mass m  = 48105.63 kg/s

so

electric power generation = m ×  e (mechanical)     .........3

electric power generation  = 48105.63  ×  0.0050 KJ/kg

electric power generation  = 240.52 kW

A chemical process stream enters a shell-and-tube exchanger at a temperature of 200.0°Fand does two passes on the shell side, ex
ikadub [295]

Answer:

a) Decrease

b) Decrease

c) Decrease

d) Decrease

Explanation:

Ti= 200°F ,

Te =  170°F

Area of heat exchanger = \pi *(2 )* 10  = 20π

<u>A) when The flow rate of the cooling fluid is increased</u>

Temperature of process stream will decrease  and this is because the tube side heat transfer coefficient will increase and this will increase the rate of heat transfer thereby decreasing the temperature of the process stream.

B) <u>when There are 200 tubes that are 1.0-in. OD and 20.0ft long</u>

The temperature of the process stream will decrease and this is because the heat transfer coefficient will increase likewise the heat transfer rate

C) <u>When The number of shell passes is doubled</u>

This will cause an increase in the overall length of the shell, an increase in velocity of constant volumetric flowrate, hence the Temperature of the process steam will decrease as well

D)<u> When The tube material is changed to copper.</u>

Due to the high thermal conductivity of copper when compared to steel , switching to copper will cause a decrease in the temperature of the process steam
