The major cause is the poverty which is a consequence of racism and the historical fact that the ruling part of the society since the colonial times has been white. The Mayas and other indigenous people are significantly poorer than the white or mixed population. One way of solving this is a better education for the indigenous population, based on their original language and Spanish, and a better inclusion into the society.
