Why did he want appeeasement, well here is what the ODNB said: "Always ferociously anti-communist, he was an early dupe of the Nazis because his attractive German princelings hoped that Hitler might be preparing for a Hohenzollern restoration." Hohenzollern was a house of former princes, kings and emperors. I am assuming that he thought that with his politics of appeasement he could achieve that.
