Mr. and Mrs. Shelby are characters from the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe.

Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe was born in June 14, 1811 and died in July 1, 1896. She was an American abolitionist and author. She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, which portrays the harsh conditions for enslaved African Americans. The book reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and Great Britain, motivating anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. Stowe wrote 30 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters.

The book Uncle Tom’s Cabin stars with a Kentucky farmer named Arthur Shelby facing the loss of his farm because of debts. Even though he and his wife Emily Shelby believe that they have a benevolent relationship with their slaves, Shelby decides to obtain the needed funds by selling two of their slaves, Uncle Tom, a middle-aged man with a wife and children, and Harry, the son of Emily Shelby's maid Eliza to a slave trader. Emily Shelby is opposed to this idea because she had promised her maid that her child would never be sold; Emily's son, George Shelby, hates to see Tom go because he sees the man as his friend and mentor.

The Theme the author wants to communicate with the portrayal of Mr. and Mrs. Shelby is:

It is impossible not to be tainted by the evil of slavery. Even though the Shelby did not want to sell their slaves they had to due to their own problems.

Which examples of propaganda are found in this
alex41 [277]

Here is the passage to the question.

Read the passage from Animal Farm. On the third Sunday after Snowball's expulsion, the animals were somewhat surprised to hear Napoleon announce that the windmill was to be built after all. He did not give any reason for having changed his mind, but merely warned the animals that this extra task would mean very hard work, it might even be necessary to reduce their rations. The plans, however, had all been prepared, down to the last detail. A special committee of pigs had been at work upon them for the past three weeks. The building of the windmill, with various other improvements, was expected to take two years. That evening Squealer explained privately to the other animals that Napoleon had never in reality been opposed to the windmill. On the contrary, it was he who had advocated it in the beginning, and the plan which Snowball had drawn on the floor of the incubator shed had actually been stolen from among Napoleon's papers. The windmill was, in fact, Napoleon's own creation. Why, then, asked somebody, had he spoken so strongly against it? Here Squealer looked very sly. That, he said, was Comrade Napoleon's cunning. He had seemed to oppose the windmill, simply as a maneuver to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous character and a bad influence. Now that Snowball was out of the way, the plan could go forward without his interference. This, said Squealer, was something called tactics. He repeated a number of times, "Tactics, comrades, tactics!" skipping round and whisking his tail with a merry laugh. The animals were not certain what the word meant, but Squealer spoke so persuasively, and the three dogs who happened to be with him growled so threateningly, that they accepted his explanation without further questions.

Answer:

The answers are B) Napoleon talks to the animals through Squealer and the D) Squealer uses glittering generalities to describe Napoleon’s tactics.

Explanation:

Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.  The passage above is typically partially biased or misleading. Options A, C, and E should, therefore, be discarded because there are not biased words. The reason why Napoleon chose Squealer was that he is biased. Squealer uses the word tactics to praise Napoleon, and he tells the animals that he was actually the one who designed the windmill even when other animals know that he once opposed the building of the windmill.
