There is direct and indirect means of control, that may often be found in our homes or schools; praise and condemnation of behaviour is one direct way to control an individual, while an indirect approach may be through traditions, customs, etc. Positive and negative means of control, according to Kimble Young, involve praise, fame and respect in regards to positive control. Negative however, takes shape in the form of severe criticism, punishment and shame.

In this case of the students, they came across an article that before it existed to them its message was unknown in their world. After reading the passage the value of voting clearly came from a level of empathy based on the obstacles the writer had over come. These students clearly had an open mind to begin. The thoughts in their mind may have been something in the realm of " This person nearly died for the right for something I can do at ease", " I would be irresponsible to not take advantage of my rights" and so on. We all live off of the backs of those in the past rather positive or negatively and those with an open mind more than likely will rise to the occasion.</span>
