Estimate how much the brain would swell due to osmosis if the concentration of the cerebrospinal fluid fell to 280mM. In other w

ords, find what the new volume of the brain would be once equilibrium was reestablished. Assume that (i) the cerebrospinal fluid is constantly replenished, so its solute concentration won’t change; (ii) only water is passing across the cell membranes into brain cells (not solutes); and (iii) the volume of the brain is mostly water.

Answer:

The correct answer is 6.67 %.

Explanation:

The average osmotic pressure of the brain is 300 mM

Given the concentration of solution is 280 mM

Difference is 300 - 280 = 20 mM

This difference is sufficient to stimulate osmosis and make water move from CSF to the brain until the concentration becomes similar.

Also, it is known that the volume of brain is about 1200 ml on an average,

Volume of fluid moved because of osmosis = 20 mM / 300 mM * 1200 ml = 80 ml

Percent swelling of brain = 80 ml / 1200 ml * 100 = 6.67 %

Jackson will be taking his college entrance exam next weekend. Part A Relate each of the following terms to his preparation for
Mnenie [13.5K]

Answer:

The answer is "Glutamate Hippocampus, Frontal lobe, Sympathetic nervous system Cerebellum, and GABA increase the performance during the exam".

Explanation:

The features that contributed himself to prepare successfully also for tests involve glutamate, the hippocampus, and the front lobes, because all of these variables are related to recall, and they know how great memory results throughout the research. Cerebellum, (GABA), a sympathetic nervous and also has a major effect on the output of Jackson the day of the exam since the nervous system sends extra blood to the muscles when stress is occurring whereas the cerebral cortex aids muscles in coordinating which,  Requires body function, like writing. Because of stress-free conditions, GABA is taken orally.

The Meselson and Stahl experiment starts with E. coli containing 15N/15N labeled DNA grown in 14N media. Which result did Mesels
cricket20 [7]

Answer:

No 15N/15N labeled DNA was observed in second generation

Explanation:

Meselson and Stahl were doing an experiment to find out the semi-conservative mode of replication of DNA. The first cultured bacteria in 15N medium which was containing a heavy isotope of nitrogen. The DNA synthesized here had more density. After that they transferred the bacteria to the 14N containing medium. When bacteria reproduced and new strands of DNA were synthesized, they observed the following -

  • The first generation had hybrid DNA with 15N/14N strands
  • The second generation had both hybrid 15N/14N DNA and 14N/14N DNA strands
  • There was no 15N/15N DNA observed.

In this way they proved that one strand of DNA is kept conserved during the replication.
