Respiration is how animal cells get their energy to preform their necessary functions. Plant cells don't use respiration, because they use photosynthesis. Photosynthesis turns light into energy.

Tid-bit of info:
Cellular Respiration Formula:
Sugar + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP
C₆H₁₂O₆ + O₂ = CO₂ + H₂O + ATP
Photosynthesis Formula:
Sunlight + Water + Carbon Dioxide = Oxygen + Sugar
Sunlight + H₂O + CO₂ = O₂ + C₆H₁₂O₆

Therefore, it takes energy for the moon to rotate its earth-facing side away from the earth. Such energy is not currently available, so the same side always faces earth, caught in earth’s gravity.
