In the late 1800's, the intention of the reservation system was to  relocate American Indians and to provide land for white settlers after the discovery of gold in American Indian territory in the 1870's. As a result, the Ghost Dance movement was a religious response to harsh reservation conditions and complete deprivation of power. In fact, the ceremony saw revitalization as an access to the future, and was an attempt to reconstruct a feeling of foundation.
