Due to lack of trees to use for building cabins, many of the prairie home were made of sod (Grass and the soil beneath it held together by roots). The Prairies can have deep fertile soil with tall grass in the landscape or dry and not very fertile soil with short grasses, but they always have little to no trees.

So this shows that jade was big part of their culture. The event in recent history changed geologist’s ideas about where the Mayans and earlier people found the jade they used in their artwork is when Hurricane Mitch devastated Guatemala and Honduras in 1999, heavy rains and flooding exposed many previously covered deposits of jade. This included a large vein of a rare blue-green variety of jadeite that had been used by the Olmec people.
