Almost 17 years ago I had a VP Shunt placed in due to brain hemorrhage. I've had it all my life and the doctors said that the su

rgery is risky. But what are the risks? Would it be better to leave it alone? I've tried to google the risks but can't get any facts that I know are true. I want to get surgery so I can finally be able to play sports and not have to constantly worry about getting hit on my head or having to explain to everyone I meet as to why they can't touch my head (due to me being protective and not wanting to risk them smacking my shunt.)

Unfortunately... You're better off keeping that VP shunt in your head. VP Shunts are usually kept in for a long time, which actually can cause a problem where skin and tissue attaches to the tube. VP Shunt removals are risky, because that means, that they would have to separate the tissues that have become attached to it, which can create major complications, especially when brain tissue is involved. You also run the risk of severe infection from doing so... The Shunt removal especially for such a long time period is better avoided, but it is possible, but you should probably bring it up with your PCP and a neurosurgeon or neurologist.

On the bright side, you can actively participate in sports just as long as it is not a contact sport, which risks contact with the shunt.

why is it that so many teens have difficulty finding the words to share how they really feel with others?
Scilla [17]

As teenagers, we are constantly being judged. Sometimes in good ways and sometimes in bad ways.

Knowing this, we struggle to be "perfect".

In reality, no one is perfect, but we try to be.

Expressing feelings can be difficult. It's like you know what you want to say, but you can't say it.

Duplex ultrasonography

Explanation:

Duplex ultrasonography is a radiological non-invasive diagnostic test performed to evaluate the flow of blood through the blood vessels – arteries and veins. This applies sound waves to image the blood flow in the vessels to look for any blockage or narrowing.

A duplex ultrasonography of the extremities measures the flow of blood in the extremities to detect for peripheral artery disease (PAD).

The symptoms presented in the elderly woman like burning heaviness, dilated and tortuous leg veins, edematous skin with speckled areas are all representative of PAD.

Coagulation panel details blood clotting markers like prothrombin etc, and this may not be sufficient to diagnose the given patient’s conditions

Angiography involves the use of radiopaque contrast dye and catheter insertion, both of which may cause allergies or side effects. Hence this test is done only when required to assess the progress of disease at later stages.
