Sahara desert is located on the African continent and is the largest desert in the world. It is the third largest after Arctic and Antarctica and its ares is more than 9,100,000 square kilometres. It stretches from Red Sea in the east, Atlantic ocean in the west and Mediterranean in north. Timbuktu was one of the thriving regions of Sahel and people there used to practise shifting cultivation, it allowed soils to be replenished by itself in 20 years wherever there was sufficient rainfall millet, sorghum and other indigenous crops were grown.
