Explanation:

Sahara desert is located on the African continent and is the largest desert in the world. It is the third largest after Arctic and Antarctica and its ares is more than 9,100,000 square kilometres. It stretches from Red Sea in the east, Atlantic ocean in the west and Mediterranean in north. In the northern region  the landscape transforms from desert to coastal plains and in the southern region it is bordered by sahel ( belt of semi-arid tropical Savannah). It is further divided into western Sahara, Tibesti mountains, the Tenere desert, Libyan Desert, Ahaggar mountains and Air mountains.

People of sahel developed herding and complex farming systems and adapted to the environment. Timbuktu was one of the thriving regions of Sahel and people there used to practise shifting cultivation, it allowed soils to be replenished by itself in 20 years wherever there was sufficient rainfall millet, sorghum and other indigenous crops were grown.
