Oxygen is required. Glycolysis<span>: glucose is converted to pyruvic acid with a net production of 2ATP molecules (a very low energy yield). Pyruvic acid is converted to carbon dioxide, water, and a further 36 </span>ATP<span> molecules from the </span>Krebs cycle<span> and electron transport chain (a high energy yield per glucose molecule).</span>
