The British passed laws called Quartering Acts that allowed their soldiers to live in their homes of the colonists without their consent. This was because the Quartering Acts using a quid pro quo argument (a favor granted or expected in return for something/you do something for me I do something for you), saying that since British soldiers protected the colonists, they should be able to have housing, by the colonist. The practice continued during the Revolutionary War when British soldiers could take over the home of a colonist and demand housing and food.
