When the media tries to stir up public opinion by reporting the need in a sensationalist manner, the practice is known as yellow journalism.

Yellow journalism is the act of increasing the circulation of newspapers by creating sensation in the stories being circulated and attracting the readers. The main motive of this is to increase the circulation of the newspapers.

This has its origin in New York City in the 1890's when the World and the Journal used yellow journalism tactics to compete between each other. Although there claims that it has declined, there are evidences that it is still being followed today.
