One of the main reasons why Paine believed that Britain was unworthy of being called a republic was because Americans did not have representation in Parliament.
According to Paine, the House of Commons was the only republican part of the Constitution. In Britain, however, the Commons’ powers were limited by the absolute power of the monarchy and the monarchy’s corruption had seeped in even to the people’s representatives.
