Meiosis is a form of cell division, in this process the cell divides itself to create a new one with half the chromosomes, used for reproduction, called haploid cell. Mutations can happen in the haploid cell, and these will carry on to the new individual created in reproduction, making it different than the original, and that's how the species diversifies.
The process of independent assortment allows a species to be diverse. This process basically means that during meiosis, genes separate from one another independently :) hope this made sense
