A cylindrical bar of metal having a diameter of 18.5 mm and a length of 204 mm is deformed elastically in tension with a force o

f 49800 N. Given that the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of the metal are 64.0 GPa and 0.33, respectively, determine the following: (a) The amount by which this specimen will elongate in the direction of the applied stress. (b) The change in diameter of the specimen. Indicate an increase in diameter with a positive number and a decrease with a negative number.

If it takes 560 joules of work to move an object 10 meters what force was needed
Pavel [41]

Answer:

F = 56 N

Explanation:

  • Assuming that the applied force is parallel to the displacement, according to the definition of work, we can write the following expression for the force required:

       F = \frac{W}{\Delta x} =\frac{560J}{10m} = 56 N (1)

A NASA explorer spacecraft with a mass of 1,000 kg takes off in a positive direction from a stationary asteroid. If the velocity
Georgia [21]

Answer: 10000 kg

Explanation:

The momentum p is given by the following equation:

p=m.V (1)

Where:

m is the mass of the object

V is the velocity of the object

Now, in this case and according the conservation of momentum:

m_{1}v_{1}+m_{2}v_{2}=m_{1}u_{1}+m_{2}u_{2}   (2)

Where:

m_{1}=1000kg is the mass of the spacecraft

m_{2} is the mass of the asteroid

v_{1}=0 is the initial velocity of the spacecraft

v_{2}=0 is the initial velocity of the asteroid (because we are told the asteroid is stationary, as the spacracft is on the sateroid it remains stationary as well)

u_{1}=250m/s is the final velocity of the spacecraft

u_{2}=-25m/s is the final velocity of the asteroid

Rewritting (2):

0=m_{1}u_{1}+m_{2}u_{2}   (3)

0=(1000kg)(250m/s)+m_{2}(-25m/s)   (4)

Finding m_{2}:

m_{2}=10000kg This is the mass of the asteroid

Does heat rise or fall?? the last person that answered did it just for the points and gave me no real answer
nasty-shy [4]
Heat does not rise or fall because it is an energy being transferred. It is the hot air which rises because colder air is denser than hotter air.

A copper wire is 1.6 m long and its diameter is 1.1 mm. If the wire hangs vertically, how much weight (in N) must be added to it
qaws [65]

Answer:

Weight required = 194.51 N

Explanation:

The elongation is given by

            \Delta L=\frac{PL}{AE}

Length , L= 1.6 m

Diameter, d = 1.1 mm

Area

   A=\frac{\pi d^2}{4}=\frac{\pi \times (1.1\times 10^{-3})^2}{4}=9.50\times 10^{-7}m^2

Change in length, ΔL = 2.8 mm = 0.0028 m

Young's modulus of copper, E = 117 GPa = 117 x 10⁹ Pa

Substituting,

      \Delta L=\frac{PL}{AE}\\\\0.0028=\frac{P\times 1.6}{9.50\times 10^{-7}\times 117\times 10^9}\\\\P=194.51N

Weight required = 194.51 N
