The mechanical weathering of hard rocks is tough and takes time and the mechanical weathering of soft rocks takes less time.

The softness and hardness of the rocks depends on the chemical composition of the rocks. The chemical weathering changes the chemical nature of rocks and hence makes it easier to break down into smaller portions.
