Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase help build our understanding of genetics by performing several experiments in 1952 that helped to confirm that DNA is genetic material. Hershey and chase found the genetic material in organisms using bacteriophages (viruses that affect bacteria) as the key element for their experiment. All their discoveries proved that DNA is the hereditary material.
