Phosphoenolpyruvate is produced as an intermediate of glycolysis; phosphoenolpyruvate donates its high-energy phosphate group to enzyme I (EI);
EI donates the phosphate group to a histidine-rich protein (HPr);
HPr donates the phosphate group to enzyme IIA (EIIA);
EIIA passes its phosphate group to Enzyme IIB (EIIB);
as it enters the cell, glucose is phosphorylated by EIIB;
glucose is transported across the membrane by enzyme IIC (EIIC);
and the end product glucose-6-phosphate is now chemically different from the parent solute.

A population of squirrels is preyed on by small hawks at maturity. the smaller adult squirrels can escape into burrows. the larger adult squirrels can fight off the hawks. after several generations, the squirrels in the area tend to be very small or very large. this is an example of disruptive selection. In disruptive selection, the extreme traits i.e., very small and very large sizes are favoured over intermediate trait i.e., average size.
