An object is thrown upward from the top of a 112-foot building with an initial velocity of 96 feet per second. The height h o

f the object after t seconds is given by the quadratic equation h= -16t^2 + 96t + 112. When will the object hit the ground?

When you factor this quadratic (or any polynomial, for that matter), what you get are the zeros of the function.  When the object is on the ground, its height is 0.  The zeros of a function are where the graph goes through the x-axis.  Where the graph goes through the x-axis, the y value is 0.  Using the quadratic formula to factor this gives you zeros of t = -1 and t = 7.  The two things in math that will never EVER be negative are time and distance/length, so we know that object will hit the ground 7 seconds after it is thrown.

The answer is 5 and -5, because squaring a positive or negative number give the same value, so square rooting that number should give back those positive and negative value. THIS ONLY WORKS FOR WHEN THE SQUARE ROOT OR THE SQUARING IS AN EVEN NUMBER.

Answer:

(a) 218.6 N

(b) 97.14 N

Step-by-step explanation:

When the system is in equilibrium, the net torque on the system is zero.

AC = 1.5 m, CD = 2.3 m, DB = 5 - 1.5 - 2.3 = 1.2 m

Let the centre of gravity of plank is at G.

AG = 2.5 m, CG = 2.5 - 1.5 = 1 m, GB = 2.5 m

(a) Let the reaction at C is R and at D is R'.

R + R' = 29 x 9.8 = 284.2 N ... (1)

Take the torque about C.

29 x 9.8 x CG = R' x GD

29 x 9.8 x 1 = R' x 1.3

R' = 218.6 N

(b) Take the torque about D.

6 x 9.8 x AD = R x CD

6 x 9.8 x (1.5 + 2.3) = R x 2.3

R = 97.14 N

Answer:

C

Step-by-step explanation:

Given 2 secants intersect a circle from a point outside the circle, then

The product of the external part and the entire part of one secant is equal to the product of the external part and the entire part of the other secant, that is

x(x + 10 + x) = 6(6 + 10 + x)

x(2x + 10) = 6(16 + x) ← distribute parenthesis on both sides

2x² + 10x = 96 + 6x ← subtract 96 + 6x from both sides

2x² + 4x - 96 = 0 ← in standard form

Divide through by 2

x² + 2x - 48 = 0 ← factor the left side

(x + 8)(x - 6) = 0

Equate each factor to zero and solve for x

x + 8 = 0 ⇒ x = - 8

x - 6 = 0 ⇒ x = 6

However x > 0 ⇒ x = 6 → C
