If something is negative then it is decreasing. We can express this in terms of velocity per second.

"A car is traveling backwards. What is its velocity if it travels 85 miles in 15 seconds"

This is the easiest word problem I can think of. (When a car travels backwards it has a negative velocity but a positive speed).

The balance in my bank account went down $85 in 15 days. How much did it change per day. Use a positive number to represent a gain of money and a negative number to represent a loss of money.

The change in balance is a loss of money, so the change is -85.

The change of -85 occurred in 15 days, so the average change per day is

-85/15

Rewrite each rational function in graphing form. Then graph it
Nadya [2.5K]
Factor the top and bottom. vertical asymptotes are the values for x that will make the denominator = 0. To find the horizontal asymptote when the powers of the numerator and denominator are the same, just divide to coefficients.
asymptotes are where the graph cant go, the graph will get closer and closer by never touch....see the attachment

Water weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. How much does the water in a tank that measures 7 ft × 4 ft × 9 in, weigh?
andriy [413]

Answer:

 • 1,310 lb

Explanation:

1) Calculate the volume of the water in the tank.

 • Area of the base of the tank: B = 7 ft × 4 ft = 28 ft²
 • Height of the tank: H = 9 in = 9 in × 1 ft / 12 in = 0.75 ft
 • Volume of the tank: V = area of the base × height = B × H = 28 ft² × 0.75 ft = 21 ft³.

2) Calculate the weight of 21 ft³ of water.

Since this is not a chemistry question but a math question, I will not use the fomula of density but set a proportion with one unknown:

 • 62.4 lb / 1 ft³ = x / 21 ft³

Solve for x:

 • x = 21 ft³ × 64 lb / ft³ = 1,310.4 lb.

So, rounding to the next integer, the water in the tank weighs 1,310 pounds, when it is full.
