Time = Distance / Speed OR Distance = Time * Speed OR Speed = Time * Distance

Since both cars travelled the same distance; it is safe to have this formula to get the actual distance travelled.

Let X = distance in MPH

Car A                          =        Car B
4 hours * X                 =    4.5 hrs * (X - 5MPH)
4X                               =    4.5(X-5)
4X                                = 4.5X  - 22.50
4X - 4.5X                    =  -22.50
-0.5X                          = -22.50
X                                = -22.50 / -0.5
X                                = 45 MPH

Speed of Car B = 4.5 hrs * (45-5)
                           = 202.50 - 22.50
Speed of Car B =  180 MPH

TO CHECK
Speed of Car A  = 4hrs * 45 MPH
Speed of Car A  = 180 MPH

  y = x^2 for x = 2, 4, 6, 8

  y-values are 4, 16, 36, 64

  differences of these are 12, 20, 28

  differences of these differences are 8 and 8, a common value.
