<u>Answer:</u> The element showing expanded octet is Sulfur (S).

<u>Explanation:</u>

Expanded octet is shown by few elements. This rule is applied when an element can surround more than 8 electrons around them. Some of the their period elements show expanded octet. These elements are Silicon (Si), Phosphorous (P), Sulfur (S) and Chlorine (Cl).

These elements show expanded octet because they contain vacant d-orbitals.

From the given options:

Oxygen, carbon and nitrogen atoms belong to period 2 and can only surround 8 electrons around it.

Sodium belongs to period 3 and also have d-orbitals. The last electron of sodium is present in s-orbital and the energy difference of s-orbital to d-orbital is more and this transition is not favorable.

Sulfur is the only element among the options which show expanded octet because of the presence of vacant 3d-orbital. For Example: In SF_6 compound, the number of electrons around sulfur are 12.

Hence, the element showing expanded octet is Sulfur (S).

Among the elements listed below, Sulfur (S) is the one that is most likely to exhibit an expanded octet in its compounds. It is included in the exceptions in the Octet Rule. For example, SF6, the sulfur atom has 6 bonds connected to it. It has a total of 12 electrons surrounding it rather than 8 electrons only.

Which of the following atoms forms an ionic bond with a sulfur atom? (Points : 3)
elena-s [515]
Ionic bonds are formed when there is complete transfer of valence electrons between two atoms.

Electronegativity tells the trend of an atom to atract electrons.

You should search for the complete set of rules that indicate whether an ionic or covalent bond happens.

There are two relevant rules to state if whether an ionic bond will happen:

- When the difference of electronegativities between the two atoms is greater than 2.0, then the bond is ionic.

- When the difference is between 1.6 and 2.0, the bond is ionic if one of the elements is a metal.

You need to list the electronegativities of the five elements (there are tables with this information)

Element  electronegativity

Cu:    1.9
H:      2.2
Cl      3.16
I:        2.66
S:      2.58

Differences:

Cu / S: 2.58 - 1.9 = 0.68
H / S: 2.58 - 2.2 = 0.38
Cl / S: 3.16 - 2.58 =0.58
I / S: 2.66 -  2.58 = 0.08

Those differences are too low to consider that the bond is ionic.

Then the answer is that none of those atoms forms an ionic bond with sulfur.

<h3>Mol of methanol =12.35</h3><h3>Further explanation</h3>

Mole itself is the number of particles contained in a substance

1 mole = 6.02.10²³ particles

Mole : the ratio of the amount of substance mass and its molar mass

\large{\boxed{\boxed{\bold{mole=\frac{mass}{molar\:mass}}}}

Molarity is a way to express the concentration of the solution

Molarity shows the number of moles of solute in every 1 liter of solute or mmol in each ml of solution

\large{\boxed {\bold {M ~ = ~ \frac {n} {V}}}

Molar concentration of methanol=24.7 M

Volume of solution = 500 ml = 0.5 L

\tt mol=M\times V\\\\mol=24.7\times 0.5\\\\mol=12.35
