This occurs because we know that the risk is shared amongst everyone in a group , which decreases individual risk. This is what is called a risky shift.

This means even the most cautious person may loosen up a bit and be willing to take a risk if they are in company of others. Sometimes the Risky Shift may also occur because you don't want to let your friend down or dissapoint them when they suggest something risky.
