Well after the civil war, the south was almost completely destroyed, the land, but also the government infrastructure. The North was very strict on the souths rebuilding, this was the time of "reconstruction" where northern troops basically told southerners what to do. Obviously this made the Confederates hate the North even more, they felt as if they were not in a "free" country at all.
