That statement is only true sometimes.  If you use 500 and 10, 10% of 500 is 50, while 20% of 10 is only 2.  Clearly, 50 is larger than 2.

Answer:

The statement is true sometimes

Step-by-step explanation:

Let

x------> a number

y-----> another number

we have that

0.10x < 0.20y ----> inequality that represent the situation

Verify

For x=100, y=200

substitute in the inequality the values of x and y

0.10(100) < 0.20(200)

10 < 40 -----> is true

For x=600, y=100

substitute in the inequality the values of x and y

0.10(600) < 0.20(100)

60 < 20 -----> is not true

Therefore

The inequality is true sometimes

Hisako sells dolls at her doll store. If she sells a doll for $35, and there is 6% sales tax, what is the tax amount a customer
Sloan [31]

Given:

The price of a doll = $35

Sales tax = 6%

To find:

The tax amount that a customer will pay on one doll.

Solution:

The price of doll is $35 and the sales tax is 6%, so the tax amount on a doll is 6% of 35.

\text{Tax amount}=35\times \dfrac{6}{100}

\text{Tax amount}=\dfrac{210}{100}

\text{Tax amount}=\dfrac{21}{10}

\text{Tax amount}=2.1

Therefore, the tax amount that a customer will pay on one doll is $2.1.

This problem can be readily solved if we are familiar with the point-slope form of straight lines:
y-y0=m(x-x0) ...................................(1)
where
m=slope of line
(x0,y0) is a point through which the line passes.

We know that the line passes through A(3,-6), B(1,2)

All options have a slope of -4, so that should not be a problem.  In fact, if we check the slope=(yb-ya)/(xb-xa), we do find that the slope m=-4.

So we can check which line passes through which point:

a. y+6=-4(x-3)
Rearrange to the form of equation (1) above,
y-(-6)=-4(x-3)  means that line passes through A(3,-6) => ok

b. y-1=-4(x-2) means line passes through (2,1), which is neither A nor B
   ****** this equation is not the line passing through A & B *****

c. y=-4x+6  subtract 2 from both sides (to make the y-coordinate 2)
   y-2 = -4x+4, rearrange
   y-2 = -4(x-1)
   which means that it passes through B(1,2), so ok

d. y-2=-4(x-1)
   this is the same as the previous equation, so it passes through B(1,2),
   this equation is ok.

Answer: the equation y-1=-4(x-2) does NOT pass through both A and B.
